A riser that only gets louder is not a transition. Take energy away, build tension, and let the downbeat land dry.
Most producers reach for a riser and stop there. A transition that actually lands does three separate things: it takes energy away, it builds expectation, and it puts energy back. Stack all three on the same beat and they cancel each other out.
Mute the hats, the 808, or both for the bar before the drop. Space is what makes the return sound big. No added layer does as much work as a removed one, and removing costs you nothing in headroom.
A riser, a noise sweep, or a reversed cymbal. One of them. Two tension elements in the same bar occupy the same range and blur into a single smear instead of a rise.
An impact or crash on the downbeat, then let the first bar after the drop be drier than the bar before it. If the reverb from the transition is still ringing over the first kick, the drop never gets a clean start.
A riser and a drop that peak on the same sample mask each other. The riser is loudest and brightest exactly when the kick needs the room, so the kick reads as weak even though nothing about the kick changed.
Move the riser's peak a sixteenth ahead of the downbeat and cut its tail so it is gone before the first kick. The ear hears the rise complete and the drop arrive as two events instead of one collision.
Most impact samples carry a lot of low end because they are designed to sound big in isolation. Dropped on the same beat as your kick and 808, that low end doubles the energy in the exact octave your low end already owns.
High-pass the impact above the fundamental of your 808, or duck its low band with the kick. You lose nothing audible: the part of an impact that reads as impact is the mid and top, not the sub.
Transitions built in the last beat always sound rushed, because there is no time to establish the change before it resolves. Build across the last bar instead: drop an element on beat one, thin out on beat three, run the riser through the last two beats.
The listener needs enough time to notice that something is missing. That noticing is the tension. The riser only confirms it.
