Phones and laptops have no sub driver. If your 808 only exists below 60 Hz, most of your audience hears nothing at all.
An 808 that measures beautifully on your monitors can vanish completely on a phone. The energy is still there, still eating headroom, still triggering your limiter — it just never reaches the listener, because the speaker cannot move that much air.
Pitch perception does not depend on the fundamental being present. Give the ear a series of harmonics — 100, 150, 200 Hz — and it reconstructs a 50 Hz root that no speaker in the room ever produced. This is why a phone can convey the note of an 808 it physically cannot reproduce.
That is the whole strategy for small speakers. You are not trying to push more sub through a driver that cannot pass it. You are making sure the harmonics above it carry the note on their own.
Separate the sub from everything above it, somewhere in the 80–120 Hz region. Keep the low band clean and untouched; do your character processing on the upper band only. Saturating the whole signal muddies the sub you were trying to protect.
Drive the upper band until the note is clearly audible on a laptop speaker. You are generating the harmonic series that lets small drivers imply the root. Turning the sub up instead just costs headroom and does nothing on the devices that need help.
Stereo information below roughly 100 Hz buys almost nothing and can cancel when a system sums to mono. Long tails blur into the next note and smear the kick. Shorten the decay before you reach for a gate.
A glide that passes through the kick's fundamental while the kick is still ringing smears both. Either land the 808 on its note before the kick hits, or place the glide between kicks.
They live in the same 40–80 Hz window, so treating them as two separate elements to be balanced independently is why low end turns to mud. Decide which one owns the transient and which one owns the sustain, then commit.
In most trap and phonk arrangements the kick owns the attack and the 808 owns the body. That means the kick can be short and the 808 can start a few milliseconds later, or duck under it. Solve it with timing first; reach for sidechain compression only when timing alone is not enough.
