Pitch, not guesswork. Find a loop's root by ear in under a minute, and stop your 808 from fighting the vocal.
You can hear that a sample is dark or bright without knowing a single note name. That gets you as far as choosing it. The moment you write bass under it, you need an actual root — because everything you add either agrees with it or beats against it.
Solo the loop and look for the moment the pitch is most exposed: usually the first downbeat, the last chord, or a gap between hits. Percussion and transients hide pitch; sustain reveals it.
Put a sine or triangle wave on a MIDI track and hold a note over the loop. Move up and down by semitone until the two stop fighting. When the sine and the sample fuse into one tone instead of two, you have the root.
Play a major third above the root, then a minor third. One of them will sound like it belongs and one will sound wrong. That tells you the mode, which is all you need to write a bassline that does not clash.
Two pitches that are close but not identical produce a wobble, and the speed of that wobble is the difference between them in Hz. A slow pulse means you are almost there. Silence means you have arrived.
This works with no plugin, no analyser, and no theory training. It is also more reliable than most automatic key detection on loops with heavy percussion or effects, because you are listening to the same interference the detector is trying to model.
A sample lifted from a record, a tape, or a pitched-down source often sits between two notes. If the beating slows down but never fully stops on any semitone, the loop is detuned rather than in a different key.
Tune the sample, not your bass. Pulling the bass off-grid to match a detuned loop means every element you add afterwards inherits the error, and the first time you layer a tuned instrument the whole arrangement fights itself.
An 808 is not a pure low tone. Saturate it and its harmonic series reaches well into the 200–500 Hz region, which is exactly where a vocal's body and lower formants live. When the bass is in the wrong key, those harmonics beat against the vocal's fundamental in the most crowded part of the mix.
That conflict reads as muddiness, so people reach for EQ. EQ cannot fix it — the two signals are genuinely dissonant, and cutting the region just makes both elements thinner. Tune first, then EQ what is left.
