Every Stage Changes The Input Of The Next One

A vocal chain is not a list of tools you own, it is a sequence where each processor reacts to whatever arrives at its input. Move one box and you have not changed the flavour, you have changed what every box after it is responding to.

The Chain, And The Reason For It

Subtractive EQ First

A compressor reacts to whatever is loudest, and on a raw vocal that is often rumble, proximity boom or a room resonance rather than the voice. Clean those out first and the compressor spends its gain reduction on the performance instead of on problems.

Compression Second

Now the detector is hearing the voice. Level the performance here — this is the stage that decides how far forward the vocal sits and how consistent it stays across a verse.

De-Esser Third

Compression raises quiet material and reduces peaks, which makes sibilance louder relative to the body of the voice. De-essing before that means you are treating an amount of sibilance that no longer exists by the time the listener hears it.

Reverb Last, On A Send

Reverb should be responding to the finished, controlled vocal. Put it before compression and the compressor squashes the tail, which is what makes reverb sound gritty and pumped rather than spacious.

Where Tone EQ Belongs

Subtractive EQ goes before the compressor; additive, tonal EQ goes after it. Boosting 3 kHz before compression tells the compressor that 3 kHz is now the loudest thing in the signal, so it turns that boost back down — you fight your own move and lose dynamic range doing it.

After the compressor, the same boost simply sounds like a boost. Two EQ instances in a chain is normal and correct; one before doing repair, one after doing character.

When To Break The Order

This is a starting point, not a law. Extreme sibilance often needs two passes: a gentle de-esser before compression to stop the compressor from ducking the whole word on every S, and a second one after to catch what remains.

A fast clipper or limiter at the very front of the chain is also common on aggressive vocals — it catches isolated peaks so the main compressor can be set for the average level rather than for the two loudest syllables in the take.

Symptoms Of The Wrong Order

  • The vocal ducks on every breath — the compressor is reacting to low end that EQ should have removed.
  • Sibilance survives everything you throw at it — de-essing is happening too early in the chain.
  • The reverb sounds gritty and pumps with the words — it is before the compressor, or on an insert instead of a send.
  • The vocal thins out when it gets loud — the compressor is being triggered by low frequency content.
  • Boosts you add do not seem to do anything — they are in front of a compressor that is undoing them.
