Reverb: Send Versus Insert

A send puts a source in a room. An insert turns the source into the room. Both are right, for different jobs.

One Room, Or A New Instrument

The question is not which one is more professional. It is whether you are placing a sound somewhere, or building a sound out of reverb. Those are different jobs and they want different routing.

What A Send Gives You

One reverb instance, fed by several sources. Everything you send to it appears in the same space, which is precisely why it glues — the ear reads shared reverb as shared room, and shared room as recorded together.

It also separates the wet signal from the dry one. You can EQ the return, compress it, duck it against the vocal, or automate it, and none of that touches the source. That separation is most of the practical advantage.

What An Insert Is For

Use an insert when the reverb is not describing a space but making the sound. A pad built entirely from the tail of a reverb on a short stab, a gated snare where the gate is the point, a texture that is one hundred percent wet — in all of these the reverb is the instrument.

The test is simple: if you would ever want to hear that element without its reverb, it belongs on a send. If dry is meaningless, put it on an insert and stop thinking about it.

Send When, Insert When

  • Send: several elements need to sound like they are in the same room.
  • Send: you want to process the reverb without processing the source.
  • Send: the wet-to-dry balance needs automating across a section.
  • Insert: the element is fully wet and the dry signal is irrelevant.
  • Insert: the reverb is being used as a sound design tool rather than as space.
  • Insert: the reverb needs to be followed by processing that shapes wet and dry together, like a gate or a heavy distortion.

Building A Send That Works

Set The Return Fully Wet

The dry signal is already on its own channel. Any dry mixed into the return is a second, uncontrolled copy of the source, and it is a common cause of a vocal that will not sit still.

Filter Both Ends Of The Return

High-pass the return so low frequency energy does not smear into mud, and low-pass it so the tail does not read as hiss. Real rooms absorb high frequencies as the tail decays; filtering the return is the cheap version of that.

Use Pre-Delay To Keep The Source In Front

A short gap between the dry sound and the onset of the reverb lets the ear hear the source clearly before the space arrives. It is the difference between a vocal in a room and a vocal made of room.

Duck The Return Against The Dry

Compress the return with the dry source as the sidechain input. The reverb gets out of the way while the words are happening and blooms in the gaps, which buys you far more space than turning the send down.

Two Reverbs Beat Ten

A short room send for glue and a longer send for depth will carry an entire record. Two spaces read as one coherent environment with things placed at different distances inside it.

Ten different reverbs read as ten different rooms, which the ear cannot resolve into any location at all. The result is a mix that sounds washed out and simultaneously flat — a lot of reverb, no sense of space.
